I don't mind buying it separately though.įinally, I've seen that a a new edition is coming soon. The first one comes with The Hobbit, which I haven't read. Do the cool illustrations have an impact on the reader? Is the unique book thing relevant? Also, the 50th Edition has illustrations from Tolkien himself, which I don't see mentioned in the 2020's one (Maybe they are also included, I just don't know). Also I've read that Tolkien wanted the trilogy to be read as one book, but it is uncomfortable to read large books on your lap or in the bed. Alan Lee's illustrations are really good, but I don't know if they add anything meaningful to the story. Hardcover editions with good binding should last longer without deteriorating. These are some interesting points for discussion: I know this depends on personal taste, but I would like some input from loyal fans who know Tolkien’s fiction and appreciates the way he wanted his work to be perceived.Īfter some research, it looks like it comes down to these two Ģ020's with Alan Lee's illustrations Ģ004's 50th Anniversary Edition I've never read any of Tolkien and I wanted the experience to be special.
